Moxa?! and other modalites we use in the office

Many people are familiar with the basics of acupuncture.  (We stick tiny needles into peoples bodies.)  But as licensed practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are other treatments we frequently offer our clients, during a standard acupuncture session.

One such modality is called moxibustion, or “moxa”, for short.  Moxa is made from an herb called mugwart.  Its leaves are ground into a fine wool.  We then place cones of this wool, on specific acupuncture points, and set them alight.  They burn slowly, and we remove them before they burn all the way.  Both the warmth, and the herb, offer therapeutic benefits.  It can help with low thyroid, low blood sugar, slow digestion, retained fluids, lowered immunity, joint pain, and depression.  It is often said, that when other treatments fail, moxa will work.

Another technique we often use, is “eStim”, or electrical stimulation.  Much like a TENS machine, eStim sends mild electrical current, that forces the muscle into rhythmic contraction.  This is great for loosening up a muscle in spasm.  We connect the leads right to the needle, so this helps us really pinpoint where we want the stim to go.  Some studies also show, that eStim can promote nerve regeneration.  It’s great for relaxing tight muscles, reducing muscle pain, and for activating numb regions that have poor sensation.
