Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
What Makes “Good” Health Maintenance?
What is health? What is “good” health? In simple words, good health is when our bodies are functioning as they should, and overall, we feel “well.” In biology class, we call this state “homeostasis;” but another good word is balance. Our bodies are made up of many organs, and systems whose job it is to keep us well. When something goes wrong, we experience “dis-ease,” or “not-well”. We become aware of this imbalance when it shows up in symptoms, but sometimes symptoms take a long time to appear.
What factors play a role in health? The shortlist: diet, lifestyle, genetics, exposure to pathogens, stress, and physical trauma. The idea of health maintenance is linked to the idea that we can do things to improve our health. There are many tools out there to do so. It can be overwhelming to try to address them all at once. For general health maintenance, I advise you to pick one or two changes and make them gradually. This is a good way to maintain or restore balance. If you are already suffering from “dis-ease,” you may need a more dramatic intervention. This highlights the importance of maintaining good health while you can. As the saying goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Start making a few healthy choices towards health maintenance, stick to them, and watch the positive effects grow!
