Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
There is much attention these days for the Opioid-epidemic, and treatments for chronic pain. Including over-reliance on the potent, yet problematic medications derived from the opium plant. It’s as good a time as any to consider alternative treatments to help with pain management. One option is CBD oil – a compound derived from the cannabis plant, which is one of the oldest known natural pain remedies. It’s showing itself to be quite effective for a broad spectrum of conditions.
TCM has some herbal formulas that effectively treat pain as well, but finding the right one takes a little bit of work, as rarely is there a “one-size fits all” kind of thing. For example, the formula Shi Xiao San is good for treating pain due to blood stasis, such as Angina, or menstrual pains. However, if you suffer from a muscle spasm or neurological pain, you might do better with a formula like ShaoYao GanCao Tang. There are others, but if you get the picture, treatment with TCM formulas can be very specific to the individual. Before prescribing, the practitioner must determine the “root cause” of the condition. When done correctly this can be quite effective.
Chinese herbs can be taken in different ways, the most convenient being as capsules or dehydrated granules. Hopefully, now you have a better understanding of some herbal alternatives to pain management. If this is something that interests you, I encourage you to reach out and ask a practitioner who has some experience in this area and give it a try.
