Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
Some Tips for Breakfast, In WInter
It is often said, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” According to TCM, that just might be true. TCM theory tells us that between 7 and 11 am, the digestive organs of the spleen and stomach are most active. It could very well be, that what we eat at this time each morning, could have a big influence on our energy for the rest of the day.
So what makes for a good breakfast? In winter time, it should be something warm, nutritious, and easy to digest. (Cold and raw foods may have more nutrients, but they are harder to digest and absorb.) Oatmeal is great, but could be too hearty for people who aren’t overly active during the day. An important factor in choosing foods, is how that food makes you feel. If a bowl of oatmeal has you feeling full and tired, it might not be best for you.
Another option is a food called congee, or “rice porridge.” 1 part white rice to 6 parts water, left in the slow-cooker overnight. Many other items can be added. For example, if you’re coming down with a cold, add ingredients such as chicken, ginger, garlic, and green onion. This provides a nourishing warm breakfast, that balances with the cold of winter, and will also boost your immunity. You can find many more ideas online, let your taste be your guide.
