Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
The Many Health Benefits of Meditation
Recently there has been much scientific research into the benefits of regular meditation. For example, it provides relief from the effects of stress and anxiety, it can help regulate our emotions, and can improve cognitive awareness; just to name a few. Meditation is a way to literally, retrain your brain. This goes without mentioning the spiritual benefits, which can also be quite profound.
Getting started with meditation can be daunting. There are hundreds of different types, if not more. Be it related to a religious tradition; as in Buddhist, Hindu, Taoist, Sufi, or Christian; or secular meditations based on new age science and psychology. Further divided among these we have focused-attention, or open-awareness meditations. You can do seated, walking, and working meditations. The lists go on and on. With a little research you should be able to find a meditation that appeals to you.
Once you’ve narrowed it down to which types of meditation you want to try, I urge you to stick with it! Too often people try meditation a few times and say, “I guess it doesn’t work for me.” The key to meditation is practice. Like anything, the more you practice the better you get. Start small, maybe 5 minutes, then try to build up to 15 minutes a day for a few weeks; at minimum.
Further benefits of meditation are better attention span, improved memory, better sleep, less pain, etc. You can try free apps like “Calm”, or “Insight Timer” to assist you in your meditation practice. It can be done alone, or you can seek out local groups with which to meditate. Whatever your preference, there’s a way to meditation for you. Seek it out, I wish you luck!
