May 2018 Email Tip ¾ – Complementary Medicine for Diabetes
Diabetes is a disease that affects approximately 12% of adults in the United States, while roughly 1/3rd of the population aged over 20 is at risk. It is a disorder in which the body is unable to regulate glucose metabolism. Glucose is importantly used by our body to produce energy. Diabetes can often be safely managed with treatment and diet. However, if left unchecked, out-of-control glucose can lead to serious health problems, such as heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure.
Most early symptoms of diabetes are mild. It’s recommended you get tested regularly in order to catch it early. With simple tests, your doctor can tell you if you are diabetic, or at risk; “pre-diabetic.” Most often, treatment and changes in diet can be used to effectively manage diabetes, but compliance is essential. Taking the right medications, eating an appropriate diet, and getting adequate exercise will go a long way towards improving your health, and managing this disease.
To kick your treatment up a notch, you can add complementary medicine, such as acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). They offer a slightly different approach, that works well with western medicine. They especially help with symptoms such as excessive thirst, irritability, itchy skin, dry mouth, and red, swollen gums. TCM holistically works with your bodies ability to heal itself. As part of a comprehensive treatment plan, TCM can help with the management of diabetes.
