Summer Recipe

Mon, June 25, 2018

Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.

Cooling, Calming, Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is a green, leafy herb; with a fresh, lemony aroma.  It can easily be made into teas, or added to recipes, for flavor, and health benefits.  It’s been used medicinally at least as far back as ancient Greece. It can be grown easily in your own herb garden and has a list of potential health benefits.

For starters, it can be used to treat painful, itchy insect bites.  (Just chew the leaves into a paste, and apply.) It’s also used to treat anxiety and nervousness.  As a tea, or water infusion, is relaxing and can help promote sleep. See if it will help relax an anxious child!  It is an antiviral, that can effectively relieve canker sores. It relaxes digestion and can soothe teething babies.  You can use the herb many ways, including the following from Alchemy of Herbs, by De La Floret.

Lemon Balm Infusion (Promotes calm, and sleep.  Taken warm, or cold)

½ cup dries lemon balm
½ cup, dried oats raw (Avena sativa)
2 Tbs. dried rosebuds or rose petals
Pinch of stevia or honey to taste
(Serves about 3 cups)

 Directions

Boil 3 ½ cups of water.
Put all herbs in 1 qt. jar, and fill it with the boiled water.
Steep, covered, 4 hours or overnight. Strain. Add desired sweetener.
Drink within 24 hours.
