Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.
Back-pain is one of the most common ailments we see in our practice. Most usually it is the lower back, or between the shoulder blades of the upper back. Our backs do a lot of work each day. Keeping us upright is no easy task. Plus consider, that the spinal cord, within the vertebral column, is the nerve center of our body. It is how the brain coordinates and regulates literally all the bodily functions that keep us alive. It makes good sense that we’d want to keep our backs healthy, yet often, we neglect our backs, until there is a problem.
When it comes to back pain, there are many things that could go wrong in this area. The muscles of our back allow us to stand, move and perform many tasks. Any of these muscles can get overworked, or strained, due to poor posture, or overexertion. Massage and Acupuncture are great ways to deal with this. As with cases of sciatica, where the sciatic nerve is being pinched by muscles in spasm.
Next is the bone, and nerve layer. The bones of the spine are stacked cylinders with squishy discs in between them that act as shock absorbers. The center of this column carries nerve fibers, that branch out in pairs at each segment. Too much force can cause these discs to bulge, or rupture, throwing the column out of alignment. This is more difficult to fix. The spine may need to be realigned and strengthened with physical therapy until the region can heal itself. Again Acupuncture and Massage can help, by improving circulation in the area, and triggering the release of the body’s natural pain-killers.
In general, the longer it takes a problem to develop, the longer it takes to fix. Know that depending on the cause of back pain, you have several options for treatment. For some cases, Acupuncture and Massage offer great relief, all without the side-effects of medication. If severe, a chiropractor or surgery may be necessary. Plus, always consider that some form of regular exercise to strengthen and improve posture will go a long way.
