Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
Self Care – Home Acupressure Self-Massage
It’s always nice to just relax and receive a massage from someone else, but did you know you can still get health benefits from massaging yourself? Especially if it is acupressure on specific anatomical points. I’ll walk you through a few important points that you can massage each day, to benefit your health.
The first power-packed point is ST 36, (Stomach channel, point 36). If you place your palm on your knee of the same side, the point is found where the index finger touches just lateral to your shinbone. Benefits of massaging this point are: strengthened immune system, better digestion, calms the mind, and promotes overall wellness. Its name in Chinese helps you to remember what it does. “Zu San Li” translates roughly to “Leg Three Miles”. Legend has it, that if your working all day, and very tired, massaging this point for a few minutes, will give you enough energy to go for three more miles. This point strengthens deficient qi.
The second point is on the Liver channel, (LR 3). For those who pay close attention each week, the Liver is associated with the wood element, which is the element of spring. Massaging this point is good for waking and moving the qi. (Remember, qi becomes stagnant over the winter, in spring it starts to stir.) LR 3 helps with stress, low back pain, insomnia and menstrual cramps; when due to qi stagnation. This point moves stagnant qi.
To massage these points, simply rub each one with your thumb in a clockwise circular motion for 2-3 minutes each. You may need to press pretty hard to feel an ache at the point. It’s good to do both sides of the body. If you have a moxa stick at home, 5 minutes of warming moxa on each point works amazingly. Another point to help strengthen the flow of qi and boost immunity is Ren 6, about an inch below the belly-button, and Ren 12, just below the xiphoid process of the chest (below the “solar plexus”).
Studies show, massaging these points helps the circulation of qi and blood, improves immunity, boosts one’s energy, helps with relaxation, and reduces inflammation. It is a simple, and safe exercise you can do several times each day from home, as part of your self-care routine.

Sound healing has many benefits including:
- reducing stress and anxiety
- improves circulation
- deepens relaxation
- increases mental & emotional clarity.
- restores balance
Vibrational sound healing can be traced back from present-day trends to many ancient civilizations including India, Africa, Europe, and the Orient. The idea is to restore balance to the chakra system and clearing the blocked energy within ourselves. Sound healing is similar to reiki healing; It is a form of energy healing that allows your body to self-regulate and self heal.
Let the sounds vibrate through you to feel the power of self-preservation and healing.
