Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
Stay well, and strengthen your body’s defenses.
We left off talking about the importance of a healthy gut. One of many reasons being that immune resistance starts there. This is why, going into the fall, we focus on strengthening the gut and digestion. Doing so provides a strong foundation for the body’s immune defense. Now that fall had come, we will shift focus to the Lung organ system.
The lung organ system consists of the lungs, as well as the skin and nasal mucosa. These all come in direct contact with the outer environment. That makes them most prone to pathogenic invasion. That is also why they are the first line of defense. We call the energy that circulates these regions “Wei qi”, or “defensive qi.” Digested food becomes qi in the gut, some of this becomes Wei qi, which the lung system then distributes to defend the outer surfaces of the body. The element of fall is metal, and Wei qi acts like a suit of armor, defending the body from attack.
To help the function of Wei qi, keep the skin covered and warm, especially while sleeping. You can support its foundation with proper nutrition. Strengthen digestion as we mentioned, and limit refined sugar. Eat mildly sweet foods like sweet potato or pears. Avoid sour foods, like citrus, as these act towards drawing things inwardly. Instead, strengthen the defense, and push pathogens out, with pungent and spicy foods that warm the body. For example, pepper, chili, onions, mustard, ginger, and garlic.
Drink plenty of water, and get adequate sleep and exercise. Especially exercises such as yoga or qigong. Acupuncture with moxibustion works great as well. These all work to strengthen Wei qi and promote its free circulation throughout the body. Following these guidelines regularly will help prevent both illness and seasonal allergies. Just don’t, “wait until your thirsty before digging a well,” and remember the adage, “ an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Crystal Bowl Sound Healing
Group Meditation
Sound healing is a form of meditation that is performed in a group where you lay on a yoga mat and let the sound transport you.
Sound healing has many benefits including:
- reducing stress and anxiety
- improves circulation
- deepens relaxation
- increases mental & emotional clarity.
- restores balance
Vibrational sound healing can be traced back from present-day trends to many ancient civilizations including India, Africa, Europe, and the Orient. The idea is to restore balance to the chakra system and clearing the blocked energy within ourselves. Sound healing is similar to reiki healing; It is a form of energy healing that allows your body to self-regulate and self heal.
Let the sounds vibrate through you to feel the power of self-preservation and healing.
