Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.

Foods to eat for the most optimal health for Spring

As the weather turns towards the warmer, you may feel the yang energy inside of you begin to stir.  Just as it is stirring within the earth, and the first buds and sprouts of spring begin to push forth.  You may feel yourself naturally being drawn outside more, as the weather becomes more favorable for outdoor activities.  Trust that urge; as spring is a time to do more outside.  Just as the bears and chipmunks exit their dens, after their long slumber, and as the ice begins to thaw; so to should we look to spend more time outside of the comfort of our homes.

Foods for this time of year should mirror the energy of the season.  Sprouting, above ground foods are ideal.  As are warming herbs like ginger, fennel, and basil; especially in early spring, while the days still carry a lingering chill from the colder months.  As the season progresses, you can move on to more cooling nourishment, such as celery, mulberry, strawberry, and peppermint.

The winds of spring bring rapid changes to the weather.  Days will rapidly shift from warm to cool.  Be sure to bundle up.  The old adage of “dressing in layers” rings true for this time of year especially.  Wind is about movement, and spring is a time for moving more.

Eat well, dress appropriately, get moving, and have a happy spring!
