Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
Self-Massage and Qi-Gong for the Summer, Fire-Element.
Following with our focus on the Summer (Fire) element, this week we’ll offer a quick self-massage, and some Qi Gong energy work, to strengthen your Fire organs.
The self-massage is a tapping exercise along both arms. Using the fingertips of the opposite hand, tap from the armpit, down the inside of the arm, then up the back of the hand, along the back of the arm, up to the shoulder. Repeat this 3-10x, then do the other arm.
“Qi Gong” means quite literally, “Energy Work.” There are many Qi Gong exercises. Most are very easy to do, and with diligent practice, can have significant benefits for your health. Technically, the self-massage is also Qi Gong, as are any stretches or exercises you might do. Qi Gong consists of simple exercises, that when done regularly, contribute towards better health.
In this exercise for the Fire element, first, get into a comfortable seated position. Make a modified “ok” sign with your hands. Have the pads of your thumbs touching the pads of your middle fingers. Breath 4 breaths in through the nose, then 2 big breaths out the mouth. Repeat this 3-5x for one set. Again, you can do these exercises each morning, each night, or whenever you have a few minutes to spare. Keep at it, and next week we’ll talk about food.
