Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.

A cold and frosty night:

The sleeping world lies motionless,

All silent, and all white.

Yasui

Haiku poems are short, lined poems that seek to invoke the beauty of nature, captured in the snapshot-like image of a single moment. As such they are helpful in understanding the ebb and flow, of the relative yin and yang within the seasons. This poem above beautifully depicts the yin essence of winter. Winter is the time of peak yin. Yin is typified by qualities such as cold, quiet, and stillness. It’s a time mostly spent indoors. (Yin is internal, yang external). Night is also yin; a time to rest, reflect, and repair.

Keeping these changes in mind, and adjusting your lifestyle accordingly, is what we mean when we say “living in harmony with the seasons.” This is one way we can help maintain robust health. For example, the longer nights of winter call us to budget more time for rest and sleep. Eating foods that are warm, hearty and nourishing is also recommended. Knowing it’s okay to add a few pounds over the winter, because we will have the opportunity to lose them when the warmer more active months arrive. It is a good idea to allow yourself to have a little more time for rest and quiet during the winter. Now that the Holidays are over, I suggest we look for more ways to do that. Accordingly, you can be at your best, and be well prepared for this new year of 2019.
