Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.
You may have sometimes heard Acupuncture and Massage referred to as “preventative medicine.” How treatments like this can prevent illness? There’s probably more than one answer to this question, but I believe, it strongly relates to stress, and how our bodies respond to stress.
There are different kinds of stress. Psychological stress is where we feel the psychological effects of strain or pressure. There’s also biological stress, where our organs strain and work harder. These stresses can affect one another (mind/body connection), and, they could also be occurring without our being aware of it. How this relates to your health, is that stress takes up resources. Mild amounts of stress are always to be expected. But with prolonged or severe stress, your body becomes depleted, and unable to do its normal functions. In simple terms, you become ill. What we don’t realize, is that our bodies are constantly fighting off illness. Illnesses you could already have, or could possibly develop. When our bodies resources are depleted by stress (occurring psychologically, or on our internal organs, for example, fighting off an infection), we can no longer maintain wellness.
Complementary medicines that reduce stress, allow our bodily defenses and functioning systems to recharge, thus increasing your chances of fighting off illness. They work directly with your bodies sympathetic (fight or flight), and parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous systems to maintain a healthy balance within your internal environment. Many illnesses can be prevented, and treated, simply by maintaining this balance, and managing stress.
