Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.
A brief history of TCM
The history of TCM is quite diverse, and goes back a long time, making it (to me at least) quite interesting. It’s roots trace back thousands of years to the “Wu” shaman, living where is now called China. Across the ages it has evolved, and been refined in many ways. It started humbly as a traditional medicine largely based on herbs, and spiritual beliefs, much as one can see in Native American, or Indian Ayurvedic medicine. Over many years it has evolved and become progressively more scientific, with much effort spent in the last century, to work alongside what we would call “modern medicine.” Practices like acupuncture, burning moxa, and cupping, may seem kind of strange for us in the west. It’s different from what we’re used to calling medicine. To some, it seems like a form of magic. However, the prevailing opinion, is that it’s quite scientific, even if not completely understood. The results it gets are undeniable, and it is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be an effective treatment for many, many conditions.
When China began drastically modernizing last century, and incorporating all the latest discoveries in science and medicine, they still insisted on preserving TCM, and keeping it on equal footing. The most urgent question for me, is not “if” it works (that’s been answered), or even “how” it works (that could lead to new knowledge, and fuel new discoveries in science). To me, the important question is, “how do we educate people, so that they are more aware of this incredible medicine that is available to them?” I’ve mentioned it’s long history in China, but it has only been gaining attention in the US since the 1970’s. That’s a lot of time to make-up! So hopefully, if you are curious, you will book an appointment. Because that’s the best way to learn if it’s for you or not. The risks or potential downsides are microscopic, and the potential for better health is immense. That’s why we at Hands on Acupuncture and Massage are so passionate about what we do, and we look forward to the opportunity to getting you feeling better.
