Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.
Many people are fighting off persistent colds and flu this time of year. The combination of cold weather and long-time spent indoors makes us more likely to get an infection. Sadly, there is often little doctors can do to help. As far as prevention goes, flu shots help with some strains of flu, but not with common cold at all. If you do get sick, your doctor is likely to prescribe bed rest and maybe chicken soup. They are reluctant to prescribe antibiotics, for fear of creating more resistant strains of viruses and bacteria.
There is some good news though. Alternatives do exist, and they fall under the domain of holistic, or complementary medicine. At Hands on Acupuncture and Massage Therapy, P.C. we carry some great products that are proven to boost your body’s defenses, leading to a better immune response. From Standard Process, we have the potent supplement combination of Congaplex and Andrographis* Regularly taking these supplements during the season is proven to helping your immune system fight whatever comes its way.
On the Chinese Medicine side of things, there is the classic formula Yu Ping Feng San. That translates to, “Jade Windscreen formula.” The idea being, it strengthens your body’s defenses, like a windscreen made of Jade. It has the key herb of Huang Qi, to build your strength and other herbs that help fight infection. There are other formulas that can be crafted towards your specific symptoms, but this one offers a great general approach.
It’s nice to know, there are some options out there for keeping you feeling well. Sometimes, when fighting illness, the best offense, is a good defense.
*It is always best to consult your Licensed Acupuncturist prior to taking any supplements
