Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.

Spring is here, in full swing.  Many people this time of year choose to go outside and get active.  Runners, soccer, baseball, and golf players all look forward to this time of year.  Often relatively inactive during the colder months, it can take some time getting one’s body back in shape for these physically demanding sports.  Unfortunately, that sometimes leads to injuries.  Common sports injuries include acute strains and sprains of muscles and ligaments (respectively), repetitive stress injuries like tendonitis and bursitis, or even inflammation at any number of joints.  Any of these conditions can be extremely aggravating, and seriously slow you down.  What can you do to speed up their recovery?

Among other alternatives, Acupuncture is there to help.  Unlike taking medications, which masks the pain temporarily, Acupuncture works to speed up the healing process itself.  It does so by improving blood and lymph circulation in the body.  This helps reduce inflammation and brings in more cells that can clean up the injured area.  It also provides pain relief, as the needles trigger our bodies innate chemicals with abilities to relieve pain.  Lastly, Acupuncture can work with your bodies nervous system, regulating it into “rest and repair” mode, instead of the stressful, “fight or flight.”

Maybe now you can see, why more and more professional athletes are turning to treatments like acupuncture to help them bounce back from injury and to keep them on top of their games.  Some teams even have licensed acupuncture continually on staff, along with their trainers and physical therapists.  But even if you don’t consider yourself athletic, you may still have injuries that can be treated with Acupuncture.
