Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
Many people who come into our office are new to acupuncture, and unsure of what to expect. I’d like to take a little bit of time to explain what you can expect from your acupuncture treatments, so that you may have a better understanding of how acupuncture can help you towards your health goals.
We always emphasize that acupuncture is not a magic pill, nor a one-and-done cure. It is true that sometimes patients may experience improvements after only one session. Even feeling quite better, and in a euphoric state, as if “on a cloud”. However, this is not always so, nor is it the end of your healing journey. To reach the goal of lasting relief, it usually takes several sessions, depending on the severity of the case. We liken it to going to the gym, or doing physical therapy. Improvements happen gradually; and usually, need to be maintained until the desired lasting effect. We set the goal of six sessions, at which point we perform a comprehensive re-evaluation to determine the extent of your progress.
In the beginning, even a negative response can be taken as a good sign. It may indicate changes to the treatment are needed, but it also means the patient is responding to treatment. In such cases we encourage the client to communicate these changes with the practitioner, and still give it a full course of treatment before deciding whether treatment is working or not.
With realistic expectations, using acupuncture correctly can improve a great many health issues without much risk of side-effects. If you’re looking for a holistic option, I encourage you to try acupuncture, but give it some time to work. The benefits most definitely grow over time.
