Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.
Here’s the deal.
Modern medicine knows that the cause of many illnesses is due to micro-organisms (germs, bacteria, and viruses).
However, that’s only half of the story.
We are surrounded by these organisms, why aren’t we always sick? Because, our bodies are equipped with an incredible defense mechanism – the immune system. When working properly, it directs certain cells in your blood and tissue to act like a powerful, tiny, army. It can neutralize many threats that would otherwise make us sick.
So why do we sometimes get sick?
We get sick when our immune system is out of balance. When our bodies defenses cannot handle a particular harmful exposure. This is because of some combination of two factors – the pathogen is too strong, or, our bodies immune defense has been somehow weakened.
To avoid illness, we need to avoid excessive exposure to pathogens (wash your hands, use disinfectants). But also, we need to keep our bodies immune system in tip-top shape. Mild activity, rest, and proper nutrition are essential.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) we stress eating, and living in tune with the seasons.
We see this as a key factor in staying healthy. Cold, and damp are factors that in excess will slow or impair the function of your immune system. Stress exhausts our immune system, so it’s less able to do its job. Winter is a time of slowing down for rest and repair, consider doing the same. Regular acupuncture treatments will keep your body balanced, and better able to fight off infections. Also, if you do get sick, TCM herbal medicine can give your body a boost, and speed up recovery. But remember, the best medicine is preventative medicine!
