Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
Repressed emotions seem to be a common source of frustration these days. Our souls are meant to be flexible just like a tree where we can have the freedom to sway in the wind yet the strength to be rooted in the earth. Our freedom to roam during social isolation may be limited, but that should not stop you from experiencing nature and the fruits of the windy wood season. In fact, they are saying a big help for combatting the virus is good old vitamin D which you can naturally get from being outside! Please enjoy a tip from my colleague and friend, Michael Savalli, MSOM, L.Ac
Still a Great Time to Cultivate the Wood Element
Spending time walking in natural spaces, such as near forests, woods, and trees, is a very undemanding way to refresh your mood, and boost your energy. Especially for those of you who spend a lot of time looking at televisions, computer screens, or cell phones. Energetically, those devices are very strong in the metal and fire elements, balancing your exposure with green and wood elements is very restoring. We’re talking again about 5 element theory. The sense most associated with wood is sight, it follows that just looking at natural green scenery can recharge and improve your vision. Feeling anxious and frustrated? The emotion of wood is anger, getting outside and spending time and nature is a quick fix remedy, for when you feel your anger levels rising.
Spending time in nature is something most of us have experienced as relaxing and refreshing, although it might not necessarily be the first thing that comes to mind. The Japanese on the other hand, even have a special word for it, it’s called “shinrin-yoku”, or “forest bathing”. It’s the practice of immersing oneself in nature and absorbing all of its effects on our five senses. We can do so in order to reduce stress, clear our thoughts, and just relax our senses. In terms of self-care, it’s pretty simple and easily accessible. Try to make it part of your daily routine, and you will quickly see the benefits.

Wood Archetype People and People with wood imbalance:
Now maybe an even harder season for you as repressed anger is the dominant emotion of an imbalanced Wood Archetype or someone with an imbalanced wood element. Imbalanced wood can cause short tempers, seasonal allergies, inflexibility, and heightened emotions, especially during the wood season. Metal helps keep wood in check, so this is a great time for wood archetype people to reflect in, organize thoughts by writing in a journal, and meditate using breath as your driving force.
Sometimes spending time in nature, especially during wood season can be one of the best cures to all. Take the time to get some vitamin D during these crazy times.
With Love,
Liz
