Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
What Is Holistic Medicine?
Holistic medicine; which includes practices such as acupuncture, chiropracty, homeopathy, and others; is a model of medicine that looks at the “whole” person, and all the factors that relate to their health. Their culture, their environment, lifestyle, etc., are all part of the same continuum. Likewise for the patient themselves. The whole body is an ecosystem, and by looking at the person this way, all of their signs and symptoms are clues to the root cause of a health disorder. (This is why an acupuncturist will ask you about your bowel movements when you show up for treatment regarding your back pain.)
Modern medicine, in general, works to reduce a disease to its most specific relevance. We see this in doctors who specialize in one body-part, (or system), specific blood-tests, vitamins, etc. The general models show modern medicine as reducing for specificity, while holistic medicine values the context within the whole. Which is better? That can’t be said, as it depends on the issue. To borrow from the Chinese concept of yin and yang, they are two-side of the same coin. They complement each other quite well. (A reason holistic medicine is also called “complementary”.) Depending on your state of health, you can try one (or more) of these medicines to keep you in optimal health. If one doesn’t work, you can try another, until hopefully, you get your health where you want it to be.
