Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.

An important part of our health, that we often take for granted, is our hearts.  In fact, that’s an understatement.  Our hearts are essential, we could not live without them, but because we cannot see them unless we suffer from some chest pain, or abnormality, we take for granted that they just work well at doing their job.  It’s understandable then, that heart disease is very common, and develops gradually in many people.  It is routinely one of the leading causes of death in developed countries.

Our hearts work constantly, pumping blood and nutrients to all our bodies organs.  They work very hard for us, what can we do to take better care of them?  For starters, maintain a healthy diet, and get sufficient activity and exercise.  If you smoke, you might consider smoking less, or better yet, plan for quitting altogether.  These lifestyle changes are important for so many reasons, and in the long-term, are arguably the best things you could do for your health.  Fish oil is also a good supplement for heart health, as is green tea.  Remember that old saying, “an apple a day…”?  Well, that goes double for your heart.  (Seriously, eat two apples a day!)

Acupuncture can help the heart too.  It effectively lowers blood pressure, thus reducing strain on the heart.  It also reduces inflammation, (which helps the heart).  Herbal formulas can effectively lower triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol, (“the bad kind”), with minimal side-effects.  Improving these factors ensures that the vessels that supply the heart muscle with blood stay flexible and free of blockage.  That translates to a healthy heart, that can keep doing its job for a long, long, time.
