Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
Taking care of your gut, a foundation of good health…
When most of us think of diet, we think in terms of calories or weight-loss. Maybe some of us, also consider vitamins and nutrients. If you follow TCM science, you may consider the energetics of food. But perhaps most important of all of these, is the effect of food on the gut microbiome.
The gut microbiome considers the many bacteria that live in our digestive system. We usually think of bacteria as bad things that cause infection, that we need to control with antibiotics. But living in our guts are millions of bacteria, that we quite literally, could not live without. These help us digest our food, and affect things like; mental cognition, immune response, bone density, and allergies. Competing with them, are several types of “bad” bacteria, that negatively affect our health. So, how do we help the “good” guys, and fight the “bad” guys? With proper diet and supplements.
Pre and Probiotics are great ways to boost good bacteria. These come in many shapes and sizes. Personally, I like the “live” ones best. These usually are found in the refrigerator section. A little research will help you find ones that you too will like.
The top foods that help good bacteria are fermented foods. Kefir – a type of drinkable yogurt, Kombucha – a fermented sweet tea, Sauerkraut – fermented, usually the refrigerated kind (same goes for pickles), Miso – fermented soy, often in soup, and Kimchi – Korean fermented cabbage and vegetables. Some people are even so bold as to ferment their own foods, the process is pretty simple. Whichever you choose, regular pre/probiotics and fermented foods will strengthen your digestion and your health. It’s also worth mentioning foods to avoid or limit, which are fried, fatty foods and too much animal products.

Vibrational sound healing can be traced back from present-day trends to many ancient civilizations including India, Africa, Europe, and the Orient. The idea is to restore balance to the chakra system and clearing the blocked energy within ourselves. Sound healing is similar to reiki healing; It is a form of energy healing that allows your body to self-regulate and self heal.
