Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
Tai Chi Basics and How To Get Started
The philosophy of Tai Chi is as important as knowing the form and doing the exercises. It promotes balance on all levels, physical, spiritual, and emotional. It encourages both a strong foundation, as well as flexible movement. The practice relaxes the nervous system, while also strengthening the musculoskeletal system. It builds flexibility of the sinews and tendons, and also, improves aerobic respiration, while promoting a more efficient exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. All of this leads to feelings of having higher energy levels, as well as a more calm and relaxed mood. On the physical side of things, the work develops better muscular coordination. This helps prevent injuries and enables the body to have greater resiliency.
There are many styles or ways of doing Tai Chi. At Hands On Acupuncture and Massage, I teach the form developed about 50 years ago by the scholar Chen Man Ching. Chen Man Ching was one of the first Chinese to bring Tai Chi to the west. He developed a form that was both complete, in terms of Tai Chi philosophy, yet also compact and simple enough for people with no Tai Chi experience to be able to learn. Besides the basics of learning the form, our Sunday class consists of several exercises to develop, and strengthen Qi energy, as well as practice in meditation. I estimate it takes about 2 years to learn the whole form, but the benefits of practice most will see right away. We are currently planning to add a new, hour-long, beginner’s class, which will be held at 11:15 on Sundays. If you have an interest in this class please email me at Michael@handsonacupuncture.com. I will be taking new students on a first-come, first-serve basis, as space is limited to about 4 or 5 students.
