Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.
We here at Hands on Acupuncture and Massage Therapy, P.C are always looking for new ways to advise or teach you how to live a healthier lifestyle. Exercise, diet, regular check-ups…we know these things are important, but there’s another simple practice you can add to your self-care that can go a long way towards keeping you in good health. I’m talking about meditation.
I know you’ve heard of it, some of you may practice it already, (which is great), others may have tried it, or want to try it, but are worried that they “just can’t do it right,” that they “can’t find that inner peace.”
I’m here to tell you – don’t get discouraged, you can!
People meditate for many reasons, and there are as many, different ways to meditate, as there are reasons. Some methods have as a goal to find higher levels of spiritual enlightenment, to find inner peace, or to clear their minds. But meditation can also be good for your health! Done regularly it can reduce the negative effects of stress, and stress-related illness.
If the higher goals of meditation are eluding you, I would advise you to start simple and keep up a regular practice. For five to ten minutes, just sit quietly, and breath. Make that the only goal for your meditation. To sit for a set time and just breath. Don’t worry about where your mind goes, or how you sit (though good posture will prevent back-ache in the long run.) If you can do that, congratulations, you’ve just begun on the path of meditation.
Try to sit regularly, each day, around the same time. As you get older, you can lengthen the time, or add multiple sessions in a day. But start slow. It matters more that you practice regularly. As you get more into it, feel free to explore the wealth of literature that’s available on the subject. With confidence, you may decide to join a group, and deepen your practice in that way. Whatever you chose, I hope you find success. Try not to criticize yourself too harshly, and stick with it. You’ll be glad you did.
