Transitioning Into Fall – From Digestion to immunity
Now that you know how to get your gut is working properly, you’ll want to feed it lots of fresh and nutritious foods from your local markets. Establishing a healthy gut doesn’t happen overnight. It takes weeks and months of proper care and diet before your gut micro-biome is where you’d like it to be. Now, you know how at least…so you’re on the right track. That means it’s the right time to look ahead and prepare for what’s next.
Late summer was all about Earth energy and digestion. It’s the central pivot of the 5 elements. It’s followed by Metal, fall, the first of the yin seasons. Yin energy is about turning inward; it’s about quietude and stillness. It’s also about rest, repair and reflection. Metal and minerals come from deep within the earth. They’re used to craft tools that embody structure and utility. We use metal to reap the harvest of each year’s crops. We eat food rich in minerals that have taken a long time to grow from the earth.
The organs associated with Metal are the lungs and large intestines. The lungs control inspiration; taking in the new, crisp, clean autumn air. The large intestines control elimination; letting go of what no longer serves us. In this way, fall is about both gathering-in, and letting go. Separating the wheat from the chaff, if you will.
Illnesses of fall tend to affect these two organs. For example, colds and flu can impact them both, as in coughing, or diarrhea. Allergies can also become more pronounced at this time, from allergens such as ragweed, grass, and mold. Taking care to boost your immune system at this time can keep you from missing days of school and work.
There are many safe ways to strengthen immunity. Supplements such as Echinacea, Elderberry syrup, ginger, and vitamin C are all helpful. Also, some teas and probiotics target boosting your immunity. These all can be used in combination, and are all safe to take daily. They work best when taken well in advance as a preventative measure, so the time to start is now.
It’s also worth mentioning, that acupuncture works in a similar manner. Acupuncture at specific points boosts your “Wei qi,” or “defensive” qi. This translates into boosting some parts of your immune system. Whichever of these options fits your plan, stick with it throughout the season. Fall is a busy time, and you’ll want to do your best to stay healthy throughout, so you don’t miss a beat.
