Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
Core Concept – 5 Elements
A very important part of TCM is its use of the theory of the Five Elements. In TCM Philosophy, we first have the TaiJi, yin, and yang; or, unity of opposites. This is how we classify complementary yet opposing forces; day and night, hard and soft, hot and cold, etc. The five elements, or five phases, offer another methodology for making further distinctions of changes that can happen over time. The best example is the progression of seasons throughout the year.
The Chinese New Year begins in Winter. This is the time associated with the water phase. At this quietest and still time of the year, the first movements towards the next year begin. From this genesis, we progress towards Spring. The movement and energy come from up and out of the earth. Spring is a time for new beginnings, and things come back to life with more energy. It is quite fitting that the phase of Spring is with the wood element. Following Spring we have Summer. Now energy in life abounds, with much warmth, the element of this season being fire. Late summer is a special season in Chinese culture. It is called the earth phase. It is important because it marks the transition from the yang (outward, expansive) months, to the yin (inward, contracting) months. For this reason, we call the earth phase “the center” of the cycle. Following earth, we now have the yin months of Autumn. The abundant energy of Summer has reached its peak, and now, returns to the earth. The elemental phase of Autumn is metal, as we use metal tools to reap what remains of the year’s harvest. Last but not least, the lowest point of the movement in energy, once again belongs to winter. Just as water seeks the lowest point, the energy of this yearly cycle has returned to from whence it had started, until the cycle begins anew.
Using this natural cycle as a guide, we can work with these natural rhythms in many ways, specifically here, to help maintain health. If one is imbalanced and has health problems, a trained practitioner can work with these natural phases to restore balance in the individual. This can be done using acupuncture on specific points, qi gong exercises, or working with diet and herbs, the goal is to help balance the 5 elements within the person, and within one’s environment. This takes into account one’s natural constitution, the time of year, and one’s phase in life. Using Acupuncture, diet, nutrition and herbal formulas we can help keep these things in balance and maintain good health.

The idea is to restore balance to the chakra system and clearing the blocked energy within ourselves.
