Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
Acupuncture to Retrain your Nervous System
The nervous system acts as the control center for many biological functions. It relates to emotional, physical, cognitive and behavioral processes in our bodies. When chronic stress affects our nervous systems, it becomes the root of many common health problems. Acupuncture acts like physical therapy for your nervous system, and retrains it to work towards better health.
There are two main parts to our autonomic nervous system (think, processes that happen “automatically”, like digestion.) There is the sympathetic part, and the parasympathetic. The sympathetic nervous system governs our “fight or flight” reflex. When we are exposed to stress, the sympathetic nervous system pumps out adrenaline, sends blood to our muscles, and other effects to prepare us for confrontation. This works great in the wild, but for most of us, sitting at a desk, this means a lot of stress is put on our bodies. This can lead to cardiovascular problems, digestive issues, poor sleep, etc.
The other side of the autonomic nervous system, the parasympathetic, tells our bodies to rest, digest, and repair. This is the side that’s triggered by acupuncture. Regular acupuncture retrains your nervous system from one that’s in constantly in fight or flight mode, to one that periodically takes time to rest and repair. This leaves you feeling better adapted, and more focused. Over time, it also reduces the risk of many health problems that are a consequence of chronic stress.
