Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
Acupuncture – Developing a Prognosis
You may have heard, from us or elsewhere, that Acupuncture is most effective when used as a series of treatments. While it is possible to experience some relief in a few treatments, lasting effectiveness tends to need several. This is why at Hands On, we arrange treatment plans into blocks of treatments, with regularly scheduled re-evals in-between, to measure your progress towards your health goals.
So how do we know how long your healing and recovery might take? That depends on several factors. For example, if you’ve had chronic long term back pain, for 2 or more years, then lasting relief may take longer than say, an acute pull that happened a few days ago. It’s true that any chronic condition (IBS, insomnia, etc.) will take longer to resolve than an acute one. Other important factors are the person’s age and overall health.
We like to say, one of the things acupuncture does is “retrain” your nervous system. We liken this to working out at the gym. You may feel good right away, but then sliding back to where you were. This is why we use blocks of six treatments. On average, this gives us enough time to see if we’re making progress in most cases. The ultimate goal here is for you to feel some relief, that is lasting until your next treatment. We then work to maintain that relief for appointments farther and farther apart, until you are feeling well with regular maintenance of one treatment every one to three months.
But how do we get there? In the beginning, we want the treatments closer together, maybe twice a week. We look for any changes that show we are making progress. Changes such as; less pain, better sleep, less stress, better digestion, better mood, or improve symptoms. If we are seeing progress week to week, then we can start to space treatments a little farther apart. If not, we can try other modalities such as dietary therapy, herbal therapy, moxa (burning the herb mugwort over acupuncture points), estim (running a mild electrical current through the needles), NAET (allergy elimination), or NET (neuro-emotional technique), etc. In any event, what’s important is that this holistic medicine takes an investment of time and a commitment on the patient’s part. It’s a collaborative process where one is working with the practitioner towards the shared goal of making you feel well.

Sound healing is a form of meditation that is performed in a group where you lay on a yoga mat and let the sound transport you.
Sound healing has many benefits including:
- reducing stress and anxiety
- improves circulation
- deepens relaxation
- increases mental & emotional clarity.
- restores balance
Vibrational sound healing can be traced back from present-day trends to many ancient civilizations including India, Africa, Europe, and the Orient. The idea is to restore balance to the chakra system and clearing the blocked energy within ourselves. Sound healing is similar to reiki healing; It is a form of energy healing that allows your body to self-regulate and self heal.
Let the sounds vibrate through you to feel the power of self-preservation and healing.
