Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
TCM and Acupuncture for Cancer Patients and Survivors
Cancer is a frightening disease that involves the overgrowth of mutated cells within the body, that often form into larger structures called tumors. These mutated cells develop when toxins such as chemicals or radiation cause frequent cell death, impairing their ability to regenerate properly. The state of our internal environment is a crucial factor, as conditions such as oxidative stress and acidic ph levels are more conducive to proliferation. Sometimes these cells are benign, or unharmful. Other times they are malignant, that is, damaging to the function of organs within the body. What’s more, these harmful cells can spread, or metastasize to other parts of the body. Cancer has many types, locations, and severity. Some are harmless and easy to treat, others quite aggressive and destructive. It generally is a slowly progressing disease, making early detection an important component for a good prognosis. Standard treatments of surgery, chemo, and radiation have come a long way. However, they can be quite rough on the body, with strong side effects. These can be mitigated somewhat by holistic complementary and alternative medicine, (CAM).
Holistic medicine works to gently bring the whole body back into balance, usually using CAM and natural interventions. These strengthen the body’s ability to heal itself. This includes many aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), such as acupuncture, massage, herbal formulas, and exercises like TaiChi and QiGong. These methods are often insufficient to treat cancer independently, however, they can be quite useful in managing the side-effects of standard treatments. Benefits include; less pain, and less reliance on pain medications, more energy, and less nausea and vomiting. There are emotional benefits too, such as reducing stress and managing anxiety and depression.
Cancer is always a frightening discussion, not just for the victim, but for their loved ones as well. Living a healthy lifestyle, having a good diet, and getting regular screenings to go a long way towards improving your prognosis. Modern medicine has made a lot of progress with its treatments, and these can be made more effective with conjunctive use of CAM, such as TCM. It is estimated that more than 1 in 3 men and women will face some form of cancer in their lifetime. The more we learn about this disease, and with the right lifestyle and treatment, we can hopefully reduce that number significantly.

- restores balance
Vibrational sound healing can be traced back from present-day trends to many ancient civilizations including India, Africa, Europe, and the Orient. The idea is to restore balance to the chakra system and clearing the blocked energy within ourselves. Sound healing is similar to reiki healing; It is a form of energy healing that allows your body to self-regulate and self heal.
Let the sounds vibrate through you to feel the power of self-preservation and healing.
