Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
Acupressure Points for the Earth Elemental
Here are two acupuncture points that you can massage to strengthen the “earth” element. They come from the Stomach, and Spleen channels, which you’ll remember are the “earth” organs. You can massage each, for 30 seconds, a few times each day.
The first point is called Stomach 36. Its name is “leg three miles” because it’s a point that will help you go an extra three miles even when you’re fatigued. It helps with any digestive problems, boosts your immune system, and fights off colds. It provides stability and grounding both physically and emotionally. It increases nourishment and can provide a boost to athletic endeavors. It also calms the emotions and balances of bipolar symptoms. It is located below the knee. Put all four fingers together, with the index finger at the bottom of the knee-cap. The point is level just below your pinky, one finger-breadth outward from the crest of the tibia (shin-bone).
The second point is called Spleen 3. Its name is “Supreme White” because it treats a great many issues. In TCM theory, the Spleen is in charge of transporting and moving nutrients and Qi throughout the body. It also helps the stomach transform food into energy and nutrients. When your Spleen Qi is weak, you may have fatigue, indigestion, bloating and loose stools. When it is strong your thoughts are clear and settled.
The Spleen is injured by stress, lack of exercise, and poor diet. It is also impaired by excessive worrying or obsessive thoughts. Massaging the point Spleen 3 helps digestion, reduces fatigue, and removes excess dampness from the body. It brings you back to center for your thoughts and emotions. It is located on the inner side of the foot. In the depression just proximal to the big bone beneath the big toe, at the distal end of the arch in your foot.
Feel free to massage these points a few times each day. Usually, go in a clockwise direction to strengthen. However, if the organ energy is in excess, or overactive, it would go counter-clockwise. Let how you’re feeling be your guide as you prepare yourself for the activities of autumn.
