Balance – Food Theory from a TCM Perspective
So we’ve talked about balance, but what does that mean? In terms of balancing one’s diet, there are several things to consider. As mentioned, you could harmonize with the season, which we’ve talked much about. Also, each individual will tend to have a constitutionally predominant element. (From the five-element theory of water, wood, fire, earth, and metal.) You could use your diet to balance with that element. Lastly, if we are suffering from any particular illness, we could supplement our treatment by choosing appropriate foods.
Let’s look into the benefits of seasonal eating. You know you should eat more greens, for the fiber and nutrients they provide. Maybe you also want to get more red and blueberries, because of their powerful antioxidants. Then there are foods we eat to enhance digestion and provide energy, like sweet potatoes. Also, some foods that are deeply nourishing, like bone broth. Are you going to try to eat each of these foods, every day? By having greens in spring, then berries in summer, etc. you are ensuring they are at their freshest. You are also having a very balanced diet, by focusing on a few things each season, instead of trying to do things all at once. Taking too many pills each day? Try the same thing with your supplements. Add more sour vitamin C in spring. Heart-helping Omega-3’s in summer. Have that warm, nourishing bone-broth in winter. This mimics a natural diet and makes managing our health through food and supplements much simpler. It also creates a foundational balance for lasting health. This type of seasonal focus is a great way to stay balanced all year long. Next week will continue with more talk about balancing your diet.
