Tai Chi – The Grand Ultimate Exercise
When I was younger, I was very athletic and active. I played organized sports, practiced Karate, ran, and made good use of the gym. As I got older, I did these things less and less. My health suffered, and I put on weight. Reaching the point of crisis, I knew I had to do something. Something to slow, and reverse this downward spiral, but I didn’t have the strength and endurance to exercise in the ways I had done in the past. I had to start from scratch. I had to find an exercise that was doable, but also effective. This is what led me to TaiChi.
TaiChi Chuan, as an exercise, has been practiced for over one-thousand years. The legends state it was developed by Chinese monks to maintain physical health, and learn self-defense. It was also a moving-meditation that added another dimension to their spiritual practice. Since then, many types and styles of TaiChi have been developed, but all have certain common qualities.
Relaxed and soft, flowing and smooth; TaiChi is a martial art that embodies Daoist spiritual principles. It focuses on the inner aspects, and cultivation of Qi, or life-force energy; rather than relying on external muscular strength. In this way, it works gently and gradually, like a flowing stream that gradually shapes the rock. It is simple enough for any novice, and effective enough to yield lasting and significant benefits.
What are these benefits? Improved strength, balance, and flexibility; all help prevent falls. It’s also relaxing, reducing effects and feelings of stress and anxiety while improving the quality of sleep. It improves cognitive function, reduces pain, and benefits cardiovascular health. The keyword is longevity. TaiChi is gentle enough to practice through all stages of life and contributes to preserving youthful vitality. Once you have learned one of the forms, it is sufficient to practice it daily in order to cultivate this longevity, and it can be practiced well into one’s later years.
