Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
What is Qi? (“chee”)
When we talk about Traditional Chinese Medicine, we often use the word Qi (“chee”). It is probably the most important concept in TCM. Qi is translated as “energy” or “life-force.” It comes in many forms and does many things. When Qi is sufficient, and free-flowing within our bodies, we have good health. Many health issues can be related to either a blockage of Qi, a deficiency of Qi, or some combination of the two.
When we talk about the Four Pillars of TCM, we are referencing four ways of improving health, by interacting with Qi. In acupuncture, we use thin needles to affect the flow of qi through the meridians of the body. Massage loosens up the muscles, and connective tissue, allowing the Qi to flow freely. Herbs and diet are important for supplementing qi, and also directing its flow. Meditation works to help the Qi on the mental level. TaiChi and Qi Gong builds Qi and helps its circulation through physical exercise.
Qi is a concept that’s sometimes hard to grasp. We don’t really have a single word for it in English, but it has several functions within the body. It transforms; for example, digesting food into energy and waste. It controls transportation, via circulation. It holds things in place, and in the vessels. It also tones, and lifts, keeping things in place. It protects the body, working with the immune system. Lastly, it keeps the body warm. All together, Qi maintains life and is seen through these functions. Taking care of your Qi means taking care of your health.

Vibrational sound healing can be traced back from present-day trends to many ancient civilizations including India, Africa, Europe, and the Orient. The idea is to restore balance to the chakra system and clearing the blocked energy within ourselves.
