Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
For those who celebrate Thanksgiving, you know what’s in store later this week; a whole lotta food. Which is great! It’s a time to celebrate the abundance of fall, spend time with family, and whatever else you like to do this holiday. However, there is one common danger for a holiday like this, that is over-eating.
With the sheer abundance of food available, there is a good chance to overdo it. This can be quite uncomfortable, with problems such as fullness, constipation, reflux, and even heart palpitations. There are some things you can do to prevent this. Be sure to eat slowly, and have lots of veggies with your meal. Also, have small amounts of grains and nuts. Avoid having too much-iced beverages with your meal. Afterward, go for a short walk, and get some rest.
From the kitchen, foods that help with stagnation are fermented items, fennel, star anise, dill, clove, and caraway. In the medicine cabinet are your usual suspects. From a TCM point of view, we offer herbal formulas such as Bao He Wan (Preserve Harmony Pill), which can be taken before and after the meal to help things along. Also, Curing Pills (Kang Ning Wan) which is a quick fix for nearly any kind of stomach upset. (These are also good to bring with you on vacation!) With those things in mind, we here at Hands On are very thankful for our clients and friends. We wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving!
