5 Elements for Fall – Essential Oils
Once you start to understand the basics of the five elements, you can incorporate their wisdom into your life in many ways. At this time it’s worth repeating the characteristics of fall. Being conscious of them enables us to better align our behavior and choices with the season. We can do this with our choice of diet, activities, and in this case…essential oils.
The end of summer marks a change in energy; from ascending and expanding outward, back downwards, and inwards towards the earth. This establishes fall as a time to re-establish solid routines that promote grounding and stability in our lives. The element of fall is metal – metal means structure. During fall we scale back and return to “normal”. Compared to the exuberance of summer, this downward movement has the feeling of gentle grief or sorrow. Both are emotions that are appropriate this time of year. However, if they feel excessive, then there are some oils that can help us move through the heaviness. For example, Frankincense, Neroli, or Geranium. If these feelings lead you to feel depressed, despondent, and with a deep feeling of pain and loss, then you can use some oils that help to ease the burden and lighten the spirits. Once again useful is Neroli or Geranium. You could also try Bergamot, Sandalwood, or Ylang Ylang. These oils have other health benefits for fall too, which we will discuss next week.
