Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.
Every month, we have a featured “tea of the month” that we offer in our office. For the month of February, we’ve had a version of Holy Basil tea. In looking up the many health benefits of this marvelous herb, I couldn’t help but think this is the perfect tea for the transition from the cold months of winter, into now the beginnings of spring.
Holy Basil is an adaptogen that offers many health benefits. It is not the same thing as ordinary basil, although the smell is similar. Holy Basil has been reported to: reduce stress and anxiety, increase mental alertness and clarity, regulate blood glucose in cases of type 2 diabetes, lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol. It also provides pain relief, reduces inflammation, helps digestive issues, lung problems (like bronchitis), and bolsters the immune system. Some warnings though. It is antifertility, so avoid if, man or woman trying to conceive, and pregnant women. It acts as a mild blood thinner, so take heed if you already take such medications. If on insulin, you may need to adjust levels, check with your doctor.
This version of Holy Basil Tea is a great “pick-me-up” with nice taste.
Holy Basil and Rooibos Tea
Holy Basil (1 Tbs fresh, chopped, or 2 tsp dried)
2 tsp rooibos tea
1 tsp dried hibiscus
stevia or honey to taste (optional)
Boil 1 ¼ cups water.
Place the herbs in a large infuser. (Don’t over-pack, let room for herbs to expand).
Steep the herbs, covered, for 5 minutes. Strain, and add sweetener to taste, if desired.
