Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.
Fall is a time of peak energy for the organs of the lungs and large intestines. Both are associated with the metal phase (traditionally, metal was important during harvest time, as the tools used to dig and reap are made of metal, taken from deep within the earth.) The Lungs take in the new breath, while the Large Intestines let go of waste, keeping only what’s most essential.
Respiratory, and digestive issues like constipation (holding onto too much), are common this time of year. A simple practice for improving health during the fall, is to go for a walk outside, and breath deeply the fresh fall air. Take a few deep breaths, in through the nose, hold it in your belly, then out through the mouth. Try to let go of any negativity you’re aware of as you do so. Fall is also a time of dryness, and wind. So if it’s a chilly day, protect your neck with a scarf.
The emotion of fall is sadness and grief. When you’re energy is healthy, this can be an almost pleasant melancholy. However, when we are holding onto this grief too tightly, this can turn into depression, which is not healthy. Try to reorganize your space. Clean up a bit, and donate or get rid of some things. Not only does this make for a nicer living environment, it can be very helpful towards letting go of some lingering negative emotions.
