Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.
Some of you may have heard of cupping or seen people with circular, purple bruises on their shoulders and backs. Cupping is a medical practice that goes back many, many years. It was used therapeutically by ancient cultures, including those of China, and Egypt. The concept is simple enough to have been used in many parts of the world and effective enough that it is still used today.
Cupping involves using small cups made of glass, bamboo, ceramic, or plastic. Suction is formed by either using a pump or flame. The cup is then placed on the skin, usually with some oil. The suction pulls out any stagnant blood that may be in that area and draws it to the surface. That’s where these purple marks come from. This allows fresh blood and lymph to flow into the muscles. The fresh blood helps the area heal and recover from injury faster. The little circles may be undesirable cosmetically but are mostly harmless. Although, if you have blood-clotting problems, or are on blood thinners, you’ll probably want to avoid this kind of treatment. Cupping can help reduce pain in sore muscles, decrease cellulite, and help some respiratory conditions like asthma.
At our office, we at Hands on Acupuncture and Massage are now offering half-hour slide cupping treatments. Using cups, along with oils, we can slide the cups along the muscles of your back, for full body treatment. It’s very relaxing, reduces pain, and can really help speed up healing on those sore and painful muscles.
