Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.
By now, we should safely be past the cold weather of winter. We saw some rapid weather changes; from unseasonably warm, to bitter cold. This is typical of early spring. But the weather should be warming up now. We see signs of the earth waking from its cold slumber. Living in harmony with the seasons, we are called to do the same. Winter was turning inward, being less active, and more introspective.
Spring’s energy is expansive. It moves up and out. It’s all about activity, and we too are called to “get moving”. One popular tradition for this time of year, is “spring cleaning”. It’s time to declutter some of the mess we may have acquired while having to spend more time indoors. In TCM we associate spring with the liver organ. It’s a great time to “spring clean”, or detox your liver as well. You can do so by eating lots of light, green vegetables. Temporary juice fasts work well too. Sour foods are also great, for example pickles, lemons, or kimchee. Milk thistle tea is good for liver detoxing, as are some TCM herbal formulas.
Another organ associated with spring are the eyes. If you’re like most, you’ve probably been staring at screens for most of the winter. Remember to take breaks from screen time. Rest ten to fifteen minutes for each hour looking at a screen. Getting active outside, and taking in the sights of spring, is another way to rest and recharge your eyes. As far as exercise goes, consistent and moderate is better than strenuous. Hiking, gardening, walking, and golf are all great spring activities. Next week we’ll have another spring recipe. Until then, enjoy the rebirth and renewal of spring!
