Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli.
After the extreme yin energy, of turning inward for winter, we begin once again towards toward the expansive yang energy in spring. Spring is a time of rapid change. Warmer days are coming, but the cold has not yet released its grip. It’s as if the two are battling it out, somedays warm an vibrant, others still with bitter cold.
A new season means new foods and new cooking methods. TCMworld.org offers this wonderful String Bean & Ginger Toss, for harmonizing with spring. It offers ginger, to keep that warm in the belly, and aid digestion. Garlic as well, to lower blood pressure and clear toxins. A touch of salt, still gently nourishing the kidneys. Honey, to aid digestion, and red pepper flakes to wake up that dormant energy within. It’s nicely balanced with string beans, to keep that heat from getting excessive. Lastly, some sour vinegar. Great for the liver energy, which has center stage this season. In all its warm, but cooling, relaxing but stimulating, sour and sweet. Just the right balance for Spring.
Ingredients:
¾ lb. string beans, blanched
3-4 slices fresh ginger root
1 clove garlic, minced
Salt to taste, Red pepper flakes (optional)
1-2 Tablespoons oil
1 Tablespoon cider vinegar
1 Tablespoon honey
Preparation:
Heat some oil in a wok, or pan.
Toss in sliced ginger, then garlic, blanched string beans, then salt.
Stir-fry 3-4 minutes.
Stir in the honey.
Place in a bowl, and toss with cider vinegar.
Add optional pepper flakes.
