Enjoy our weekly wellness tip from Licensed Acupuncturist, Michael Savalli, from the office of Elizabeth Martin.
Foods, Five Elements, and Balance
If you know your 5 element constitution, you can prioritize foods based on this. The element refers to which organs systems will tend towards illness, and which foods can help rectify this. These are your natural tendencies: foods you respond to well, or foods you react to negatively. For example, with food sensitivities. Let’s say you’re a “fire type”. You tend to feel warm, be most active in summer, and maybe have some heart or circulatory related problems. You can choose foods based on this to keep you balanced. You may eat more “cooling” foods, like cucumbers or mint tea to manage this heat. If the heat is in excess, you can use the principle of “like treats like”, add a little spice to your dish to help vent and clear warmth. This is both an art and a science, but the more you practice basing your diet around your own constitution, the better at it you will get. Just make little changes to your habits each day.
The third type of balance is for when you have an actual illness, you may need to pick foods based on what organ system is out of balance. (Remember, each organ, channel, and food corresponds to one of the five elements.) This might require a visit to an acupuncturist, or functional medicine practitioner, but once armed with the knowledge of what is out of balance, you can use diet, along with herbs and other treatments, to bring yourself back into alignment.
Hopefully, now you have a better understanding of how food works in a TCM diet. I have left a lot of things out, but if you’re interested in learning more, you can do some research, or schedule a Q&A with our office.

Crystal Bowl Sound Healing
Group Meditation
Sound healing is a form of meditation that is performed in a group where you lay on a yoga mat and let the sound transport you.
Sound healing has many benefits including:
- reducing stress and anxiety
- improves circulation
- deepens relaxation
- increases mental & emotional clarity.
- restores balance
Vibrational sound healing can be traced back from present-day trends to many ancient civilizations including India, Africa, Europe, and the Orient. The idea is to restore balance to the chakra system and clearing the blocked energy within ourselves. Sound healing is similar to reiki healing; It is a form of energy healing that allows your body to self-regulate and self heal.
Let the sounds vibrate through you to feel the power of self-preservation and healing.
